Abstract: For a course that teaches serious game design, the Covid-19 pandemic offered plenty of subject material. Additional to the learning requirements of building a serious game, the situation also provided the opportunity for students to deal with their own personal Covid-19 anxieties through the medium of creative game design. This paper describes how a selection of students responded to the topic of building a game that was meaningful to the situation they were experiencing. The serious games context was ideal for this project, as this term refers to games that have a purpose other than entertainment. Students were allowed to interpret the topic in any way they wish, and their responses gave an interesting insight to their personality and emotional reaction to the background situation. As such, the process provided a degree of therapy, similar to that of art therapy, through the design, building and playing of the games.
