Graffiti in the 21st Century Classroom: Promoting learning and empowerment for students with traditional and digital graffiti
Abstract: The connection between graffiti and anti-authoritarian many be a natural attraction for youth. It almost seems synonymous with the adolescent tasks of developing autonomy and identity. Being able to express one’s thoughts and have influence brings a sense of psychological and social empowerment for individuals (Zimmerman, 1995). The purpose of this paper is to examine graffiti creation and how it can be used to promote well-being and a sense of empowerment for youth in schools. Specifically, we wanted to explore; 1) how the use of graffiti can contribute to youth well-being and empowerment, and 2) what role technology plays in graffiti creation and empowerment. This information then helped develop recommendations for the use of graffiti and technologies in education.
