Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a method for obtaining language learning material for Japanese in an engaging and customizable way. It is part of our Integrated Language learning EXperience framework (ILEX) for studying Japanese, which enables incidental learning while browsing Wikipedia content. The framework includes a deep analysis of the writing system as well as a method for finding reliable and accurate representations of words and expressions in context. We aim to exploit the concepts of autonomous learning, association, and language learning by example. The approach is to let the language student decide on the topic domain, supply dictionary lists and example data quickly and on-demand, and support the student’s learning progress by illustrated deconstruction of sentences, words, even characters, their analysis and transparent representation. The source of the example data is Wikipedia, since it offers a wide variety of topics and interconnectivity between them. The seamless integration in the browser, the illustrative presentation, the ability to obtain dictionary lists for selected topics along with on-demand translated example sentences from Wikipedia, all this offers a comprehensive learning experience.
