Abstract: A study was conducted that classified 444 3D printing lesson plans from an online repository. The classification scheme categorized learning activities based on instructional frameworks and the affordances of 3D printing. The results suggest that some educators view 3D printing as a production tool for instructional illustration. The categorization scheme implies that educators should move more 3D printing lessons to higher levels of learner engagement. This study prompts educators to consider developing 3D printing activities that involve the act of creation, problem-solving, higher-order thinking, and critical thinking through a learner-centered approach.
