Abstract: The introduction of Appleā€™s Siri and then the Amazon Echo ushered in a new era of virtual or cognitive assistants in popular use. While prior virtual assistants were generally problematic, over the past decades millions of VA devices have entered homes and classrooms. This systematic literature review examines how virtual assistants are being deployed in formal and informal educational settings and highlights several key themes and applications to direct future scholarly endeavors and suggest new directions.
