Abstract: Online education has a potential to become a better model of higher education than the conventional one. It offers considerable benefits for learners, but at the same time has significant flaws. We identified five factors which negatively impact the instructor and instruction, the student and learning, among them technocentrism, formalism, consumerism, convenience, and underestimation of basic pedagogic principles. To improve online learning, it is critical to develop a special E-Pedagogy of online teaching and learning and provide quality professional development for online instructors on its basis. Practical solutions for the problems are offered.
