Abstract: This presentation shares our current research on independent educationally oriented podcasters. Podcasting is a popular and fast growing medium, and it appeals to adults as a method to learn new things. Podcasts are simple to create and easy to consume. The podcasting ecosystem can be seen as a shadow educational system and a complement or challenge to traditional adult and higher education. This research looks at people who create educational content, without the resources or constraints of large networks or corporations. We review our research on the educational implications of successful independent podcasters, Women of Color who podcast, and the variety of issues and themes we have discovered across the entire spectrum of educationally-oriented podcasters. We end the presentation with suggestions for future directions for research.
