Proposal for new UI features to enhance motivational experiences for a mobile language learning application
Abstract: This research investigates the means to increase the studying times spent with a mobile language learning (m-learning) app used in a blended learning environment. Subject of the study is a smartphone application, “KoToToMo Plus”, that is used by students to study basic level Chinese at Tohoku University. The app has been well adopted as a part of the classroom, but the application suffers from low retention rates. In this study we propose a model that facilitates the design of additional user interface (UI) features, meeting the students’ learning goals and experiential goals, in order to create deeper engagement. We do this by applying design elements from both user experience (UX) and learning design literature. This will provide us a more holistic view into the students’ overall learning experience, potentially informing us how motivation can be sustained long-term in mobile language learning environments.
