Abstract: Cloud computing has experienced a considerable upswing over the last couple of years. Nowadays, the applications in educational organizations are as diverse as the cloud service concepts themselves. This paper raises and discusses a range of critical issues that educational organizations are facing when making cloud adoption decisions. First of all, many organizations lack a comprehensive strategy vital for a successful transition to the cloud. Secondly, numerous decision-makers are uncertain how cloud computing affects security of data, applications and infrastructure. Thirdly, legal and ethical issues relating to the storage and processing of personal data are major causes of concern. Other internal and external factors, such as IT governance, awareness and availability, are also addressed in this paper. The goal is to support practitioners concerned with the integration of cloud services and to provide a foundation for empirical research.
