Abstract: Educators are enamoured with the possibilities and allure of 3D printing for classroom use. It is essential to consider carefully how this technology can enhance learning. This paper will address this issue by setting forth the affordances of 3D printing and reviewing instructional frameworks. These perspectives will inform a scheme for categorizing 3D printing activities. Categorizing learning activities will facilitate the connection between the affordances of the technology and the learning outcomes. 3D printing is a compelling new technology, but how it is used determines the learning outcomes
