Abstract: This study reports an investigation of assigning students various roles in online discussion. Numerous discussions were conducted in the courses. Students were assigned various roles, for example, initiator, commenter, elaborator, researcher, and challenger. The participants of the study are undergraduates in entry-level education courses at an urban university in the United States. Mixed-research methodologies are applied for data collection and analysis. A survey is the research instrument to collect quantitative data. The survey investigates student perceptions of the various role they are assigned to play in online discussions. Qualitative data are collected through student written reflections. This presentation will report findings of the study.
