The Use of ICT by English Teachers in Public Primary Schools
Abstract: This paper describes the research design and main findings of a study about the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by English teachers in a municipality in southeastern Mexico. The study is part of a national project that aims to document and analyze the uses of ICT by English teachers in public elementary schools and the factors that influence such uses. The methodology of the study is of a quantitative nature. A questionnaire was applied to a sample of 30 teachers. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Although the study covers institutional and teaching factors, in this paper only those related to the former are addressed. Results suggest that the technologies English teachers use are not very varied; teachers use ICT mainly for administrative tasks such as recording the performance and attendance of students; and, the strongest inhibitory factor, of an institutional nature, is the lack of training.
