Abstract: In this study, we created an online reading program for English language learners led by a pedagogical agent that is uniquely designed with two levels of perceptual arousal (high vs. low) and inquiry arousal (high vs. low), as defined in Keller’s motivational model. We then examined how the two levels of each arousal type affected the students’ perceived situational interest, three types of cognitive load (e.g. intrinsic, extrinsic, and germane), and reading comprehension. A total of 157 English language learners participated in the study. The results of two-way ANOVAs showed the significant effect of inquiry arousal on students' germane cognitive load (p = 0.046) and on reading comprehension (p = 0.019). Also, an interaction effect was found between the inquiry arousal and the perceptual arousal on germane cognitive load (p = 0.012). The findings indicate that, in the presence of high perceptual arousal, the high inquiry arousal results in an increase in germane cognitive load as well as improved reading comprehension.
