Abstract: The aim of this practice based paper is to describe the SWAD platform, which offers several tools to support learning and teaching management. This tool has been used by 185,000 users at the University of Granada (UGR) and, in the last 4 years, through the OpenSWAD site, by another 24,000 users from 1,600 educational institutions from all over the world. This article summarizes the functionality, implementation, and results obtained with such platform. Besides, we also describe the short and medium term challenges including the addition of gamification, geolocation, and data mining tools so as to improve the motivation and the academic performance of the students, also enabling an easier monitoring and assessment for teachers.
