Abstract Discussion Board, as a major component of online classes or blended courses, allows students to have a real conversation about the course content with their instructors and their peers. To promote the quality of learning on the discussion board, graded posts, posting deadlines, the length of the post, and other guidelines are commonly used by online instructors. However, discussion forums sometimes fail either from lack of interest or participation. Active learning as a tool in traditional onsite class is used to challenge students to engage through a higher level of thinking and hand-on-activity with their peers and the instructors instead of passively listening to the lecture or watching videos and simply reading the content materials. This study applies the idea and strategies of active learning to blended and online classes by using the discussion board as a major platform that incorporating active learning strategies such as group discussion, case study, group presentations, debates, problem-solving etc., to promote students’ interests and participation on discussion board. This data is collected from the blended class and online class at the Berkeley College and the University of Missouri.
