Abstract: The purpose of this project was to merge STEM education and public health education to increase levels of knowledge, skills, and physical activity among elementary-aged students. XXXX faculty and students from Technology and Engineering Studies (Engineering), Health Science (Life Sciences), Civil and Environmental Engineering (Engineering), Mechanical Engineering (Engineering), and Exercise Science (Life Sciences) worked collaboratively to design lesson plans and activities to support learning and behavior change. Specifically, engineering faculty lead out on the development of STEM-related lessons and activities, including topics of power, energy, mechanisms, levers and then converting traditional bikes to pedal assist e-bikes. Life Sciences faculty lead out on the development of public health-related lessons and activities, including identifying safe bike routes to school, measuring energy expenditure, bike safety and courtesy, goal setting, etc. The faculty/student teams partnered with the school and community to plan a culminating event, which involved the converted bikes and physical activity. Additionally, data was collected on student interest in STEM – specifically engineering and technology, and in their interest and understanding of public health related concepts. The data reveal that student interest and confidence in working in technical and engineering fields increased, and students better understood the relationship between technology, engineering, and health.
