In this paper, we describe and present a newly completed version of Alien Rescue 2017, a learning game. It leverages technologies and combines best practices from educational research with innovative technologies to deliver an engaging learning experience for middle school students in science. We will also share research findings conducted using this new version. We believe our design and development process and design-based research experience will be of interest to the community and should provide useful insights to others who are engaged in similar endeavors.
