Abstract: Research-based learning is a learning format that requires the active participation of learners in self-directed processes of learning and cooperation under the guidance and scaffolding of teachers/tutors/facilitators. The use of digital media in research-based teaching and learning offers new possibilities for enhancing the self-directed learning both in individual and group facets. It also enables the development of key competences, such as information competence, ability for self-organization or the competence for solving problems, and it empowers social learning.
