Evaluating the Online Teacher: An Analysis of the iNacol Quality Standards for Online Teaching

Abstract: In response to a call by virtual schooling professionals, the International Association for K12 Online Learning (iNacol) released a set of standards for quality online teaching in 2008, and a revised edition in 2011. This document was created in order to aide virtual teachers and programs in evaluating quality online instruction. This paper aims to analyze the standards in terms of learning theories and how the standards and subsequent theories are applied to virtual teacher evaluation. The study found that the iNacol Standards for Quality Online Teaching had a strong cognitivist slant with little attention to community building in online teaching.
