Abstract: The purpose of this study was to develop a support system for generating Japanese sentences. Selection restrictions are co-occurrence constraints or possibilities that are observed between given lexical items. Generally speaking, writing natural sentences is quite difficult for second language (L2) learners, who are not familiar with the selection restrictions in the language. We developed computational models that generate Japanese sentences in the form of “Subject-Object-Verb,” considering the selection restriction based on the results of statistical analysis of a Japanese corpus. The models were applied to a system supporting sentence generation. Finally, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the system usability, enabling us to determine the efficacy of the system for learners of Japanese as a second language.
