Literacy-Centric Technology Tools and Social Creativity
Creativity is recognized as an important 21st century skill for students. However, teachers often do not understand the concept and are unable to assess their students in this area. Technology provides one way to mitigate these issues. This paper describes a method for evaluating the creativity affordances and constraints of freely-available online tools. To demonstrate this method, we examined three literacy-centric websites (Wattpad, Fan Fiction, and Quotev) for use in English language arts classes. Using content analysis for the technological design, we examined each of the three sites. All had advantages and disadvantages, but we determined that, based on creativity affordances of the design, Wattpad was the best option for high school ELA classes.
