Analysis of Research into Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning Environments
Abstract: Technological improvements have blossomed allowing for an explosion in online learning. This learning can be defined as either asynchronous or synchronous learning. Research suggests benefits and drawbacks to each approach involving a variety of learner, instructor, institutional, and environmental factors. Institutional concerns continue to lean towards asynchronous learning environments. Instructor preferences can be found for both environments, though increased workload in asynchronous environments has the effect of increasing preference for synchronous environments.
