Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe a problem-based learning environment designed for sixth grade learners, known as Alien Rescue (AR), and to summarize recent research relating to it. The design of the program is based on existing research in the areas of motivation and problem-based learning. We wish to investigate the manner in which a multimedia enriched problem-based learning environment can support learning among a sixth grade student population. Additionally, the design and development of the program is planned and implemented using a research and development process that supports the requirements of design-based research. This approach has enabled a number of research studies on various aspects student learning performance and motivation. Recent research on motivation within AR suggests that the program encourages and supports student motivation and enhanced learning outcomes when compared to traditional forms of direct instruction in sixth grade science courses.
