Abstract: Analytic writing is an expectation in the 21st century classroom, yet is a weakness among many students in today’s classroom. To address these problematic inefficiencies, scaffolding strategies were implemented to support 20 fourth-grade students in in American rural elementary school setting. As students worked to build mind-maps in a digital environment, critical thinking skills were nurtured, questioning strategies were enhanced, and research/ note-taking was expected. At the conclusion of this study, writing samples were compared and scored by an external examiner using a rubric. The results indicated a 49% increase in scores for students who received the intervention within a classroom and a 24% improvement over the control group in the study.
