Abstract: This paper is a report of work-in-progress to design, develop and test Mission HydroSci (MHS). MHS is a 3D game for students learning water systems and scientific argumentation. Support from the U.S. Department of Education enabled the MHS project team to begin designing and developing MHS in 2015 with anticipated field-testing in 2018. With a goal of helping students meet Next Generation Science Standards the team envisions approximately 15 hours of game play as a 3-4 week curriculum in middle school science. This work-in-progress report provides an introduction to the vision for MHS, early illustrations of the anticipated game play, and key issues and lessons being learned in developing a substantial game as educational curriculum.
