Share Paper: Lessons Learned: Implementing a Large-Scale Online Degree Program

Abstract: There’s a saying that hindsight is 20/20 and change will always occur. Hopefully, by sharing experiences those who are contemplating implementing an online program can avoid some of the mistakes and pitfalls of the past. In 2008 a mid-south university implemented a large-scale online degree program in which courses might have up to 1500 students in a class. Several lessons were learned from the experience. Those included the following: start small, include video lessons, use adjuncts instead of teaching assistants, have frequent contacts with assistants, have personalized contact with students, and have all agreements and understandings pertaining to the program ...
