Abstract: E-learning is on the rise in Australia, and programs are increasingly designed for groups of distributed learners. In response, University of Wollongong researchers conducted a study to examine the effectiveness of an online e-learning synchronous platform in training pre-service teachers from multiple campuses. The study included pre-service teacher students, including 17 located on the University of Wollongong’s main campus and 58 students joining online from Wollongong and its various satellite campuses. This study’s findings reinforce those of pre-existing studies, showing that a multi-location model’s effectiveness is dependent on the nature of the online platform, as well as staff and student engagement (Bell & Federman 2013; Issa, Issa & Chang 2012). Additionally, this study found the presence of an expert tutor at each site to be paramount, and that video conferencing is preferred to synchronous learning platforms, although such platforms are effective in other e-learning.
