Social Network Sites for Talent Identification in STEMI

Abstract: A challenge that Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) faces is to speedily renew human capital. In South Africa, a key intervention for achieving this goal is the Youth into Science Strategy. Social network sites support and encourage individuals to learn together in their own time and space. The question that this paper addresses is: How do SNS assist human capital development for STEMI? The My YESA Passport, developed on MXit, disseminates STEMI related information to users with the view to potentially identify talented users. The aspects analysed were: (i) user question density, (ii) participating countries, (iii) categories and frequencies of users’ questions (iv) categories of users, (v) categories and gender groups, (vi) correlations and facilitator feedback, and (vii) other observations. The My YESA Passport is a tool in a multipronged approach to promote STEMI awareness across South Africa to address skills shortages in STEMI related careers.
