Abstract: Learning analytics (LA) deals with big data in educational settings by collecting, analyzing and interpreting information about student behaviors, decisions and choices. While the idea of using student information is nothing new, LA offers some new insights for online instruction that was not possible before. Instructors, in their quest to improve quality of online instruction, turned their attention to learning analytics. The conferences, books, and numerous research studies dedicated to learning analytics in the last few years is a clear indication and outcome of this interest. The question, however, is what tools and instruments are available for online instructors. This paper reviews available LA tools for online instructors and provides learning design suggestions for instructional designers.
