Screencasting for Student Learning and Assessment (Bring Your Own Laptop)

Abstract: This workshop will provide the attendees with a new perspective on the use of screencasting technology for improving student learning and assessment of learning outcomes. The workshop facilitators will model how they are using student-created screencasts as a strategy for engaging learners with course content, both individually and in collaborative groups. Special attention will be given to methods for assessing screencasts to measure student learning. Attendees will be guided through the process of creating screencasts, and develop assignments and assessments for use in their own teaching.

Objectives

Attendees will: 1) Gain knowledge of the principles that undergird the use of screencasts in educational settings. 2) Broaden their perspective of how to use screencasts to promote student-centered environments ?and foster reciprocal teaching techniques. 3) Gain skill in creating screencasts using various tools. 4) Develop assignments that utilize student created screencasts to meet learning objectives. 5) Create assessments for student-created screencasts that align with learning objectives.

Qualifications

Dr. Douglas Harvey is an Associate Professor of Instructional Technology at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He holds a D. Ed. in Instructional systems from The Pennsylvania State University, and has taught instructional technology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level for the past 20 years. Dr. Harvey uses screencasts for "flipping" the classroom as well as in his online courses to provide lectures and tutorials. He also has students create their own tutorials on technology tools, reflect on their learning experiences, and present and share their course portfolios. ? Dr. Ron Caro is an Assistant Professor of Education at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. He holds a Doctorate in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University. He has taught the instructional technology course within the teacher education program since 2006. Dr. Caro Utilizes screencasting and video chat software to engage students in higher order thinking and reciprocal teaching within project based activities.
