Abstract: University of Tampere is studying the use of a purpose-built SLS that enables the use of immersive interactive technology. This paper presents the design principles for the OASIS SLS to make the space playful, open, informal and opportunistic. The opportunistic use strategy refers to using the resources according to individual needs. The space has designed affordances for ludic engagement and collaboration to function as: 1) a library for books, e-books, media and games, 2) as a social space for relaxing, drinking coffee and tea, meeting students and staff and 3) group work area with 4 46-50” screens, a multitouch interactive table and an interactive projector as shared displays for collaboration with capability to plug in own hardware. The space functions as a Living Lab environment where use is studied by collecting data with permanently installed web-cameras, surveys and interviews.
