Exploring University Students’ Use of Ict
Abstract: In this study, we surveyed students in a mid-sized university in southern Ontario, Canada to determine their use of a large variety of computer-based technologies. The survey included three Likert scale indicators, one for assessing Importance of Use, one for Frequency of Use and the other for Confidence of Use. Findings indicate that, in general, the students who participated in this study employed computers and smartphones with greater frequency , and with higher levels of confidence , than tablets. Also, larger proportions of participating students engaged in technical, social, and informational interactions primarily for personal purposes (instead of academic or employment purposes), while greater proportions engaged in computational interactions on these three devices primarily for academic purposes. However, larger proportions of students used computers and laptops to engage in all four types of interaction (technical, social, informational, computational) for academic purposes.
