Mobile Apps for Supported eLearning
Abstract: Mobile computing devices like the iPad and iPad mini are increasingly ubiquitous in schools across the country. At the University of Oregon’s Center for Advanced Technology in Education (CATE), we have been evaluating mobile apps for the extent to which and ways in which they support student learning. Using the NCSeT typology of eText supports as a conceptual model, this presentation will provide a method for evaluating mobile apps that focuses on the ways in which they support the reading and learning process. Presenters will share and discuss: (a) examples of supported eText in mobile apps; (b) approaches to understanding their impact on the reading and learning process; and (c) research conducted at U of O exploring the use of mobile apps with supported eText to support learning and literacy for special student populations (students with learning disabilities, students who are blind or low vision, and English Learners).
