Abstract: This paper reports on a recent study of the experience of online doctoral learners. In response to concerns regarding non-completion and lengthy completion rates, the author has begun the development of an application (“app”) designed to aid potential students reflect upon their readiness for doctoral-level studies. The original study identified six areas in which the research participants described experiencing challenges to their identities as doctoral students: societal, friends and family, professional, cohort, academic department, and academia.
