Idea Garden: Knowledge Creation with Insights from the Nature
Abstract: Drawing experiences from a past study with a knowledge building community, fundamental theories of knowledge creation are revisited and a conceptual framework for addressing the challenges faced is elucidated. In tandem with the principles of knowledge building (Scardamalia, 2002) and the SECI model of knowledge creation (Nonaka & Takeuchi, 1995), the shortcomings of the scaffolds as afforded by current online instrumentation of collaborative discourse is further elaborated. Through the metaphor of an “Idea Garden”, the design principles for a new knowledge building platform is discussed and proposed. This paper reports on the conceptions supporting a beginning work which forms the baseline for future research on intuitive interaction modalities, salient learning analytic indicators and affording computer supported collaborative learning at large.
