Using Copyrighted Materials in U.S.-Based Online Courses: A Primer
Best Practices Session
ID: 39240
Abstract: Reproducing materials for use in a U.S.-based online course or workshop raises questions of copyright. If you plan to incorporate copyrighted material (documents, charts, photographs, videos, etc.) into your course, you will need to (1) ensure your insertion either meets the requirements of the Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization Act (the TEACH Act) or constitutes “Fair Use” under U.S. copyright law or (2) obtain permission from the copyright holder. In this session, participants will learn what copyright is, how to determine whether use of copyrighted materials may be permissible under the TEACH Act or under Fair Use, and how to seek permission to use materials protected by copyright.
