Abstract: This workshop will focus on using Universal Design (UD) principles and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to create accessible learning environments in Multi-User Virtual Environments (MUVE). Research based on computer simulations and people with traumatic brian injury, will be demonstrated using Second LifeĀ© and a Kessler Foundation funded project demonstration site for training people with disabilities for employment related skills.

Objectives

1. Demonstrate accessibile tools for navigating and interacting with MUVE. 2. Demonstrate the integration of Universal Design principles and the W3C guidelines for web accessibility for instruction in MUVE. 3. Demonstrate instruction strategy using MUVE for training People with Disabilities (PWD).

Topical Outline

1. Accessible tools used for MUVE instruction. 2. Universal Design strategies for delivering instruction in MUVE for PWD. 3. Virtual tour of demonstration project in Second LifeĀ©. 4. Hands on participation in using accessible tools.

Prerequisites

Knowledge and interest in using MUVE for training and instruction.

Thomas Conway: Project Director of the EmployAble Project, Kessler Foundation funded grant, at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Education, Center on Disability Studies (CDS). CDS Media Coordinator, directing over 60 accessible websites and content for grant funded dissemination. PhD Candidate in Educational Technology, University of Hawaii at Manoa, College of Education, Educational Technology Department. Megan Conway: Megan Conway has published and presented widely in the areas of access to technology, universal design, disability studies in education, and sociological approaches to disability. Dr. Conway is the Co-Principal Investigator of EmployAble: World Without Barriers, a virtual employment center for people with disabilities. She is Managing Editor for The Review of Disability Studies: An International Journal, and teaches online graduate classes in multidisciplinary Disability and Diversity Studies.
