From Telling the World to Showing the World in an Era of Social Media
Abstract: This article reports on part of a PhD action research study. It discusses the multiplicity of communication channels offered to students through the integration of social and participatory media into the face-to-face classroom. It connects the multimodality of social environments with the need to redesign classroom programs. The study took place in an Australian public high school, over an eighteen month period within the practitioner researcher’s thirteen classes that she taught during that time. The online environment encouraged multimodal literacies while supporting a wide range of learning abilities. By designing such social and interactive projects into her Middle Years Mathematics and Information Technology classes, as well as her Year 7 integrated program class, her research contributes to a knowledge base which will support teachers from across disciplines to recognise and implement literacy practices, not as an isolated classroom activity, but across different discipline areas
