Abstract: This paper examines the feasibility of converting hand written, supervised, final examinations to Adobe Acrobat documents that can be simultaneously marked by teams of tutors anywhere, anytime – preferably using a rubric marker. At this point we have worked with two prototypes of ‘scannable’ student answer booklets and used these in three courses under the direction of the university’s manager of examinations. Given international financial crises and a university budget that requires fixed enrolments and restricted CAPEX and OPEX, there was urgency in determining how we might do more, better but with less
