Abstract: In this presentation, we will discuss how a variety of online social media instruments can be put into place to not only set in motion a positive learning experience but to also support instructors. We will introduce successful cases using wikis, Flickr, VoiceThread, and Second Life in higher education settings. Online social media can not only facilitate meeting course objectives but also promote renewed student commitment to learning. However, it is important to note that multiple challenges lie ahead in integrating the use of online social media into the classroom. Hopefully this presentation can help implement these tools successfully and yield an understanding that it is not a difficult endeavor to conquer but it is an intentional venture to come to the edge and meet the students on their terms.
