Abstract: The aim of this research and development project was to examine how Narrative Theatre, an intelligent narrative centered learning environment, impacts writing achievement and self-efficacy when used with sixth grade students. Initial results in the quantitative segment of the study demonstrated that students’ writing self-efficacy increased after using Narrative Theatre. Initial results in the qualitative study focusing on 4 male struggling writers indicates that the students are eager to use Narrative Theatre to support their writing; they have a special interest in the intelligent media function that will allow their stories to “come alive” in a virtual storyworld. Future iterations of the intelligent narrative centered learning environment will be tested incrementally with the same 6th grade population in order to gain a full picture of its impact on writing achievement and self-efficacy.
