Abstract: In the past decade, immersive virtual worlds became a point of interest for educators and e-learning designers due to the multitude of collaborative learning opportunities they provide for today’s digital natives. Since virtual worlds are simulated environments, they also enable learners to experience events and situations that are difficult in real life. This paper aims to develop a systematic approach to teaching with the construction of immersive virtual worlds for higher education. To do this, four open source virtual world creation tools are reviewed, and assessment instruments for learners are developed to judge effectiveness of each of these tools.
