DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP:The Evaluation of Digital Scholarly Publications in the Field of Education
Abstract: If one of the main functions of the university is the production of knowledge, then the ways in which digital technologies impact scholarship—its creation, dissemination, archiving and assessment—is of concern to all academic constituencies. And although the current cultural climate seems awash in the digital, there is very little consensus about what constitutes digital scholarship, and how such work proves analogous to traditional scholarship. This paper is a report on the findings of a study being conducted for a graduate level doctoral dissertation to answer the following questions: How is the quality of digital scholarly publications assessed for tenure and promotion? In applying Boyer’s model of scholarship, what key aspects of quality measurement are critical towards a model of evaluation of digital scholarship for tenure and promotion in the field of education?
