Abstract: The HAAGA-HELIA School of Vocational Teacher Education has conducted research in the use of social media as a learning environment since 2007. Learning is organized with the help of collaborative communities and social networking. In this work formal learning has got features of social media and informal learning. Students have had the freedom to choose the used social media tools and freedom to create desired collaborative learning spaces for small groups. From the learning point of view the novel issue has been that also afterwards the whole collaborative learning process can be seen in the learning space. In this paper, we report the results of developing the collaborative learning space concept to improve the learning process in a social media based learning environment in teacher education. In addition, the results of using personal learning environments are reported.
