Using Storytelling Alice to Teach Egyptian Students Speech Acts

Abstract: The purpose of this workshop is to present the experience of the researcher who used Storytelling Alice with her students to enhance their English Language Proficiency in terms of learning speech acts. Storytelling Alice is a 3D programming software designed primarily for teaching secondary school students programming. The software includes "worlds" that refer to the setting of the story, imaginary characters, buildings, animals, and aliens. The children have to learn first how to select the world, how to choose the characters and most importantly how to make the characters move, speak, duck, run, dance, and turn. Speaking is one of the most important features in this presentation as it is one of the means of communication, and negotiation of meaning through language.

Objectives

In this workshop the participants will learn: 1- How to download and install ALice 2- How to use its programming features to make the characters move, turn, speak, dance 3- How to make 3D movies 4- How to integrate Alice into their profession. 5- How to add characters into a particular setting 6- How to save the world as an Alice Document 7- How to save the world as a web document 8- How to add convesration bubbles into their movies or instead, how to record their voices to and add it to a specific character

I- Introduction A- What is Alice? B- Why it is important to be integrated in teaching English as a foreign langauge? C- An example of the problems that Egyptian students face when learning English: Speech Acts II- Body - How Alice is downloaded and installed on your PC - Getting started - Choosing the world - Selecting the Characters - Teaching the characters how to move, walk, turn, and speak - Showing the participants a sample movie - Participants will work in pairs on making their own movie - Making a movies from a linguistic perspective: Speech Acts III- Conclusion - Summarizing the main points - Open discussion regarding the participants opinion regarding other uses they suggest of Storytelling Alice.
