Abstract: Tourism, and namely cultural tourism, are one of the most interesting experiences in which people learn a lot, in an informal and relaxed/playful mood. In the paper the eTreasure project run by the New Media in Education – New MinE Lab of the University of Lugano (Switzerland) is presented, showing how it can help tourists and students make the best out of their staying in a city, enjoying and playing while at the same time visiting its monuments and learning about them. Players interact with the application via SMS messages, which give them instructions on where to go, and ask them to answer given questions. Answers, sent back to the system as replay SMS messages, allow the player to move forward, yielding to the following hint (point of interest plus question). Together with the description of the application, results of the first pilot experiences are presented, as well as future developments.
