Abstract: In the GLOBE initiative, five of the leading learning repositories in the world are making their collections of content available through integrated search facilities. For end users, this means access to more relevant material: in most cases, the repository that the learning objects originate from is not particularly relevant, and, in any case, having to search separately in different repositories is too cumbersome. Current GLOBE partners include ARIADNE, EDNA, MERLOT, LORNET and NIME. I believe that GLOBE will help to bootstrap world-wide search capabilities over all learning repositories. In this sense, GLOBE is becoming one of the first global learning search engines! In this talk, I will present the exciting progress that GLOBE has made and will indicate how you can benefit from its infrastructure and tools. As abundance of content is useful but not sufficient for learning, I will also talk about some of the challenges that this abundance will create and about research that can help us make better use of the opportunities that GLOBE technologies offer.
