Media, representations and distributed online learning
Abstract: Many online courses are not radically different from traditionally delivered faculty classroom lecture courses however; online courses may be unique in enabling students to translate their understanding using multiple representation systems. The Studio model is a potential grounding for structuring online spaces. One online studio is analyzed in this study. Questions were asked about students’ sense of engagement; perceptions about the different forms of representations available in the course site; attitude about their own learning online; whether they believed their learning was comparable to learning experiences in traditional classrooms; attitudes towards interaction with others in the course; as well as questions about basic learner characteristics (N=118). The analysis also measures learning locating items covering content created using specific media.
