Online Learning in Higher Education: Best Practices for Engaging and Motivating Adult Learners through Meaningful Connections

Abstract: Engaging with and motivating adult learners goes far beyond praise and grades, it is a practice by which the online facilitator employs research-based practices to develop meaningful connections with the learners. Strategies that are grounded in Andragogy, research, and utilization of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principal of engagement. With over fifteen years of teaching over one-hundred online courses in higher education, the presenter has been deemed as an expert in truly engaging learners in meaningful and rich learning experiences. The purpose of this “Best Practices” presentation is to share strategies that can easily be employed in higher education courses in any discipline. The overarching theme the Principal of Engagement in UDL and the foundation of the theory of Andragogy will provide the background for this presentation and overall content.
