Abstract: Kansas State University (KSU) strives to provide a dynamic online learning experience that applies theory and best practices in K-12 educational contexts for teacher candidates to develop requisite skills. The KSU Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed to meet their students’ needs through fully online courses and support. Every MAT student is a teacher candidate and assigned to a small cohort of peers under a Graduate Teaching Assistant, referred to in the MAT program as a GradCat. The unique GradCat model is based on mentorship within a community, guided reflection, and constructive feedback on coursework and field experiences. The online education model allows flexibility for GradCats and their cohorts to interact despite packed calendars. GradCats are mostly full-time educators, and the MAT students are adult learners with unique needs and busy schedules. The relationship between GradCat and teacher candidates is fundamental for success in the MAT program. In this session, KSU GradCats will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this model and provide practical suggestions for enhancing online Education Preparation Programs and mentoring adult learners.
